What is Saxenda?
Saxenda is a injection consisting of an active ingredient called Liraglutide. This hormone is naturally produced in the intestine after you’ve eaten food.
It works as an appetite suppressant by telling the receptors to make you feel full and slowing down the digestion of food.
As it reduces your appetite, it enables you to stick to a diet with a controlled daily calorie intake and can help you to lose weight consistently.
Who is it suitable for?
It is suitable for adult patients, over the age of 18 with an initial Body Mass Index (BMI) of:
- ≥30 kg/m² (obese); or
- ≥27 kg/m² to <30 kg/m² (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity such as dysglycaemia (pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes mellitus), hypertension, dyslipidaemia or obstructive sleep apnoea.
How does it work?
Saxenda® is a once-daily injection which can be taken at anytime of the day. Treatment is titrated to a maximum dose of 3.0mg/day. The titration dose is worked out alongside your pharmacist. If however the patient does not lost at least 5% of their initial body weight, whilst being on 3.0 mg/day dose, for 12 weeks, the treatment maybe discontinued.
