Should I book privately or use the NHS?

You may be able to get your jab free on the NHS. For example, you may qualify because of your age, pregnancy, a long-term condition or caring responsibilities. Other groups qualify too, so check the full NHS flu vaccine guidance before booking.

For 2026/27, NHS vaccinations for most eligible adults started on 1 October. Pregnant women could have theirs from September. The national flu programme guidance explains the timing.

If you qualify, use the NHS flu booking service or contact your GP surgery. Our calendar here is for paid appointments. If you don’t qualify for a free jab, we can help you arrange a private vaccination and check that it’s right for you.

Getting ready for your private flu jab in Chester

A little planning makes your visit easier. Our booking calendar allows five minutes for the appointment, but leave yourself enough time to arrive and ask questions. If needles make you nervous, tell us; we can talk you through what will happen.

Before you set off:

  • Wear a top that lets you uncover your upper arm easily.
  • Bring a list of your medicines if you don’t know their names.
  • Have your booking confirmation handy.
  • Let us know beforehand if you need help with access or communication.
  • Call us if you feel unwell or need to rearrange.

We’ll ask about your health before giving the vaccine. Please tell our pharmacist:

  • If you’ve had a serious reaction to a vaccine before.
  • About any allergies, including an egg allergy.
  • About any long-term conditions or treatment you’re having.
  • If you are pregnant or think you could be.
  • If you’ve already had a flu vaccination this season.

We’ll explain the vaccine and answer your questions before asking for your consent. You don’t need to arrive knowing which vaccine you need; that’s something we’ll discuss with you.

What protection does the flu jab give?

Protection usually takes up to 14 days to develop. A flu jab cannot prevent every infection, but flu may be milder if you catch it after vaccination. Protection fades, and the strains covered change, so a jab is needed each season.

You may have a sore arm, aches or a mild temperature afterwards. These usually settle within a day or two. Severe allergic reactions are very rare; vaccinators are trained to treat them. Injected flu vaccines cannot give you flu.

Keep the leaflet you’re given and follow our aftercare advice. If you’re worried about a reaction, ask for advice. The NHS explains flu vaccine protection and side effects in more detail.
