05 / Nov

Choosing a chickenpox vaccination in Llandudno

Looking for a chickenpox vaccine in Llandudno? We offer private appointments at Craig Y Don Pharmacy on Clarence Road. The vaccine costs £70 per dose. Before paying for a child’s vaccination, check whether they can have it free through the NHS Wales programme.

There is a new catch-up offer for some children from November 2026. Call 01492 876562 before booking for a child so we can check their age and vaccination history.

Check the NHS Wales options before booking privately

Wales now includes chickenpox protection in the routine childhood programme. The combined MMRV vaccine protects against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. Your child’s GP practice can check which doses are due from their date of birth and vaccination record.

A separate NHS Wales catch-up programme runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2028. It covers eligible children born between 1 January 2020 and 31 August 2022 who have not had chickenpox or two chickenpox vaccinations. Ask your GP practice about this offer before arranging a paid appointment.

If you are unsure, start with these checks:

  • Have your child’s red book or vaccination record handy.
  • Tell the practice whether your child has had chickenpox.
  • Check whether earlier injections were MMR, MMRV or chickenpox-only vaccines.
  • Ask whether a routine or catch-up NHS appointment is due.
  • If your child can’t have it on the NHS, call us. We’ll check whether we can vaccinate a child of their age at Craig Y Don.

You can also read Public Health Wales guidance on MMRV. For a free catch-up appointment, contact your GP practice.

What does a private chickenpox vaccine in Llandudno cost?

We offer chickenpox vaccination for £70 per dose. The consultation costs £10. If you go ahead with any vaccines or medicines, we take that £10 off your total. If you need two chickenpox doses, you pay £140 altogether.

If you have already had a dose elsewhere, bring your record. We will check what you still need before you pay for another injection. For more information about our vaccination services and prices, visit our main vaccination service page.

If you’re booking for more than one person, call us and we’ll work out the cost for your family.

Is vaccination right for you?

Chickenpox vaccination helps prevent infection, but it does not protect everyone completely. It is a live vaccine, which means it contains a weakened form of the virus. It is not suitable during pregnancy, and some people with a weakened immune system cannot have it.

Before your appointment, tell us about:

  • Whether you’ve had chickenpox or a chickenpox vaccine before. It’s fine to tell us if you’re unsure.
  • Pregnancy, plans to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Medicines or illnesses that affect your immune system.
  • Serious allergies or a reaction to an earlier vaccine.
  • Recent vaccinations, blood transfusions or antibody treatments.

If you are pregnant, you should not have this vaccine. Avoid pregnancy for one month after the last dose. If you’re planning a pregnancy, ask us about timing before you book.

Adults and children may need different advice, and previous doses matter. Chickenpox-only vaccination usually involves two doses, often four to eight weeks apart. We will agree the timing with you. Do not use that interval to change your child’s NHS MMRV appointments.

Visiting our Llandudno pharmacy

Your appointment is at Craig Y Don Pharmacy, Clarence Road, Llandudno, LL30 1TA, part of Everest Pharmacy. Find the map and opening hours on our Craig Y Don branch page. Your appointment lasts 15 minutes. Allow a little extra time in case we ask you to stay afterwards.

A little preparation helps:

  • Bring your vaccination record, or your child’s red book.
  • Have a list of current medicines ready.
  • Wear clothing that makes your upper arm easy to reach.
  • Call ahead if you need help with access or feel anxious about needles.
  • Contact us before travelling if you have a high temperature or feel very unwell.

After vaccination, a sore arm, fever or rash can occur. Read the leaflet you receive and follow our aftercare advice. Tell us if you live with a newborn baby, someone who is pregnant or someone with a weakened immune system. We’ll explain whether you need to take any precautions around them afterwards. The Varivax patient leaflet explains the advice for that vaccine. Follow the leaflet we give you at your appointment.

Your questions about the chickenpox vaccine in Llandudno

Can adults book as well as children?

Yes. If you’re booking for yourself, we’ll ask about your health and whether you’ve had chickenpox or the vaccine before. If you’re booking for a child, call us with their age first so we can check whether we can see them here.

Does the £10 consultation cost extra if I have a vaccine?

No. If you go ahead with any vaccines or medicines after the consultation, we take the £10 off your total. It is not an extra £10 on top of the vaccine course price.

What if someone in my household is at higher risk?

Speak to your GP first. People in close contact with someone at risk of severe chickenpox may qualify for NHS vaccination. The NHS chickenpox vaccine guidance explains this route. If vaccination is needed for your job, ask your employer about occupational health.

What if I already have spots or have been exposed?

Call your GP or NHS 111 for advice rather than waiting for a routine vaccination slot, particularly if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Phone before visiting a healthcare setting if you think you have chickenpox.
