Should you book an NHS or private COVID vaccination?
You may be able to get your vaccination free through the NHS. In England, the autumn 2026 programme covers people aged 75 or over, including anyone turning 75 by 31 January 2027. It also covers residents of care homes for older adults, and people aged six months to 74 whose immune system is weakened by a health condition or treatment. Read UKHSA’s eligibility guidance.

What can a COVID vaccine help with?
COVID vaccination lowers your risk of becoming seriously ill, needing hospital treatment or dying from COVID. Protection fades over time, and the virus changes. You can still catch COVID or pass it on after vaccination. Read the NHS explanation of vaccine benefits.
Is private COVID vaccination suitable for you?
Before giving you a private COVID vaccine in Cheshire, our pharmacist will ask about your health, medicines and previous vaccinations. This helps us check that the vaccine is right for you. Booking and paying doesn’t mean you’ll automatically receive it.

When should you arrange your vaccination?
Tell us when you last had a COVID vaccine. NHS autumn guidance recommends waiting at least three months between doses. For a private appointment, our pharmacist will check how long you should wait, based on your vaccination history and the vaccine we’re offering. Read the current vaccination timing guidance.
Recently had COVID? There’s no fixed waiting period once you’re well again, but don’t attend while you could still pass the infection on. If you feel unwell before your appointment, call us to rearrange. See UKHSA’s advice after a COVID infection.
What to check before your appointment
Your booking confirmation tells you what to bring and where to go.
- Confirm the date, address and service: keep your booking confirmation handy.
- Check what you need to bring: your confirmation should say whether you need ID or other documents.
- Have your medication list ready: include the names of medicines rather than relying on descriptions such as “my arthritis tablets”.
- Write down your main questions: such as worries about a previous reaction or your other treatment.
- Let us know if you need extra help: call ahead if you need help getting into the pharmacy or communicating with our team.
Ask us for the vaccine’s patient information leaflet and talk through any worries before agreeing to the vaccination. Let us know if you’re nervous about needles or have fainted during an injection before.
Before you leave, make sure you know what to expect afterwards and keep your vaccination record.
What side effects should you expect?
Common reactions include a sore arm, tiredness, headache and aches. Rest can help. If you need paracetamol and can take it, follow the instructions on the packet. UKHSA also advises avoiding driving for at least 15 minutes after vaccination because fainting can occur. Follow any additional advice given at your appointment. Rarely, inflammation around or within the heart has been reported after COVID vaccination. Seek urgent medical advice for new shortness of breath. See the current UKHSA safety advice.
Call 999 or go to A&E for chest pain or tightness, severe difficulty breathing, or a fast-beating, fluttering or pounding heart within a few days of vaccination. Do not drive yourself. Contact NHS 111 if other symptoms are worsening or worrying you. Read the NHS advice on when to get help.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book privately if I am under 75?
You may be able to. Contact our Chester team before booking so we can check the age limits for our service and whether the vaccine is right for you. Some people under 75 with a weakened immune system can get a free NHS vaccination, so check this first.
Can I have a flu vaccine at the same appointment?
It may be possible to have both at the same visit. Call us before booking so we can check whether this is right for you and whether we have a suitable appointment. A COVID booking doesn’t automatically include a flu vaccination. Read UKHSA’s guidance for vaccination providers.
Can I be vaccinated during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
COVID vaccination can be given during pregnancy and breastfeeding when it’s appropriate for you. Being pregnant doesn’t on its own qualify you for a free NHS COVID vaccine in autumn 2026.
