How much does a travel consultation cost?
Your travel health consultation costs £10. You can find more about the service and individual vaccine prices on our travel clinic page. Vaccines cost extra, and the price is per dose. Some courses need more than one dose. We’ll explain the cost of any malaria tablets during your consultation. Ask us for the full cost of your vaccines and medicines before you decide to go ahead.
It is worth checking your NHS options too. After a risk assessment, GP surgeries can provide certain travel vaccinations free, including hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and polio as part of a combined vaccine. Other travel vaccinations are not routinely NHS-funded. Read the NHS travel vaccination guidance before paying privately.
You’re welcome to ask us:
- Which vaccines do I need for my trip, and why?
- How many doses will I need, and when should I have them?
- What is the full charge, including the consultation?
- Are any certificates or follow-up appointments charged separately?
- When would I need to return, and what happens if my plans change?
When should I book before travelling?
Try to get travel health advice at least four to six weeks before departure. Some vaccines need several doses, and protection takes time to develop. If you are planning a winter break or visiting family overseas, booking early gives you more room to arrange any follow-up visits.
Travelling sooner? Contact our Cheadle Hulme team anyway. Last-minute advice can still help, although you may not have time to complete every recommended course. Tell us when you’re leaving so we can explain what there’s time to do. TravelHealthPro explains how to prepare.
Preparing for your travel clinic visit
Your travel health advice depends on where you’re going, what you’ll be doing and your health. To help us plan with you, bring:
- The countries you’re visiting, including any stopovers.
- Departure and return dates, plus where you expect to stay.
- Planned activities, such as rural travel or a longer stay with family.
- Your vaccination record, including previous travel vaccines.
- A list of your medicines and relevant medical history.
Let us know if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system or have had a serious reaction to a vaccine. These details can change the advice you need. If you have a long-term condition, seek advice early and involve your usual healthcare team where needed.
You do not need to arrive with a shopping list of vaccines. Our role is to help you understand what is appropriate for your journey. You can use our destination checker and travel service information as a starting point, then discuss the results with us.
Check the FCDO advice for each country on your route for current entry requirements. If you need a vaccination certificate, let us know before your appointment so we can check the requirements and timing for your trip.
Travel health involves more than vaccinations
If your route includes a malaria-risk area, ask about malaria prevention. Depending on your destination and health, you may need tablets as well as protection from mosquito bites. Take any prescribed course as directed, including after you return; the timing depends on the medicine.
Insect repellent, suitable clothing and treated mosquito nets can help reduce bites. You can also ask us about staying well while you’re away, including avoiding bites and managing your medicines.
If you develop a fever or other malaria symptoms after visiting a risk country within the past year, seek an urgent GP appointment or call 111. Mention where you travelled. If symptoms start abroad, seek medical help there rather than waiting to get home. Read the NHS malaria advice.
