What is the Weight Management Pen?

The Weight Management Pen is an injection consisting of an active ingredient called Liraglutide. This hormone is naturally produced in the intestine after you’ve eaten food.

It works as an appetite suppressant by telling the receptors to make you feel full and slowing down the digestion of food.

As it reduces your appetite, it enables you to stick to a diet with a controlled daily calorie intake and can help you to lose weight consistently.

Who is it suitable for?

It is suitable for adult patients, over the age of 18 with an initial Body Mass Index (BMI) of:

• ≥30 kg/m² (obese); or
• ≥27 kg/m² to <30 kg/m² (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbidity such as dysglycaemia (pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes mellitus), hypertension, dyslipidaemia or obstructive sleep apnoea.

How does it work?

The Weight Management Pen is a once-daily injection which can be taken at any time of the day. Treatment is titrated to a maximum dose of 3.0mg/day. The titration dose is worked out alongside your pharmacist. If however the patient does not lost at least 5% of their initial body weight, whilst being on 3.0 mg/day dose, for 12 weeks, the treatment may be discontinued.

Any side effects?

As with most medications and treatments, there is always the chance you will experience side effects or risks. Although not everyone will suffer from them, the most common are:

• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Vomiting

These are considered very minor and tend to settle gradually during the first few days or weeks of using the medication, as your body adjusts to it.

There are very rare chances of more serious conditions such as

• Pancreatitis
• Gall Bladder Disease
